DGO6.06 "Tarasoff Incidents"

The purpose of this order is to set procedures for investigating and reporting threats communicated to a psychotherapist, commonly referred to as Tarasoff incidents.

I. GUIDELINES

A. DEFINITION OF A TARASOFF INCIDENT. A Tarasoff incident is one in which a person has communicated to a psychotherapist a serious threat of physical violence against a reasonably identifiable victim.

DGO6.05 "Death Cases"

6.04.01 PURPOSE

This order describes the procedures for the preliminary investigation of death cases and delineates responsibilities of the responding officers, supervisors, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). This order does not cover In-Custody Deaths (DGO 8.12) or Investigations of Officer-Involved Shootings and Discharges resulting in death (DGO 8.11).

DGO5.24 Disengagement Procedures

5.24.01 PURPOSE

The purpose of this order is to establish protocols for disengaging from a barricaded/isolated subject, and to establish guidelines for the duties of officers, supervisors, and superior officers. The San Francisco Police Department's highest priority remains safeguarding the life, dignity, and liberty of all persons. The Department is committed to accomplishing this mission by using strategic communication, crisis intervention, and de-escalation tactics, whenever feasible, before resorting to force.
