3.07.01 PURPOSE

The San Francisco Police Department (“Department”) stands for Safety with Respect for all. These standards serve to maintain and build trust and respect with the community in our role as the guardian of Constitutional and human rights. We will engage in just, transparent, unbiased, and responsive policing, monitoring and measuring our actions, so we may identify safety issues and address them in a pro-active and collaborative manner.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS 

This order clarifies and standardizes the meanings of certain terms commonly used throughout the Department. The following terms will be interpreted in all Department communication according to these definitions, except when another definition is specifically stated.

DGO3.01 "Department Written Directives"

This General Order describes the different types of written directives mandated by the San Francisco Police Department (Department). It establishes a development process for the creation, evaluation, approval, and maintenance of written directives within the Department and delineates responsibilities for the written directives process. The Department’s Written Directives Unit (WDU) shall be responsible for facilitating and publishing written directives covered in this general order.

DGO2.09 "Personal Use of Social Media"

The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics requires all sworn law enforcement officers to carry out their duties with courtesy, respect, and professionalism. The Department is committed to maintaining legitimacy with the community and safeguarding the public's trust. The Department is charged with the duty to protect life and property, to maintain the peace, to prevent crime, and to enforce criminal laws and ordinances. These duties are best accomplished when all members conduct themselves in a professional, law abiding, respectful and courteous manner.

DGO2.08 "Peace Officer Rights in Disciplinary Investigations"

2.08.01 PURPOSE

The Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act (“the Act”), Government Code sections 3300-3313, establishes various employment rights for sworn members. Among other things, the Act establishes various peace officer rights regarding interviews during administrative (i.e. disciplinary) investigations. This General Order re-affirms pertinent rights applicable to such investigations and administrative interviews. This General Order neither expands nor contracts the rights identified in the Act.
