This order seeks to establish a written policy for SFPD members wearing laser protective eyewear and to provide direction on the use of such eye protection.

With civil unrest throughout the nation the deployment of laser devices has been used as a new tactic to injure officers by impairing their vision. Accordingly, to maintain a high standard of officer safety the Department will issue laser protective eyewear to officers. The laser eye protection kit includes a frame, a case, as well as a clear lens, a smoke lens, and a laser protective Iens.

When assigned to crowd control events, officers will don their laser protective eyewear in situations where they deem it necessary to avoid injury to their eyes.

Issuance of laser protective eye wear will be conducted by the Property Control Division (PCD}.  PCD will coordinate with each Station's Facility Coordinator or designated unit member to distribute the laser eye protection for their station and/or unit. The Station or Unit Facilities Coordinator will provide PCD with an itemized. list of the members they have issued laser eye protection to. Each station of unit will maintain an equipment issued log that identifies the station or unit, and include the members first and last name, star number, and A number as receiving the eyewear and the data received. A copy of the issued log generated by each Station and/or Unit will be scanned and emailed to HSU ([email protected]) and PCD for recordkeeping.

For any requests for replacement of the protective eyewear due to damage of loss that requires a replacement pair to be issued, members shall write a memo addressed to the member's Commanding Officer requesting replacement of the laser eyewear protection. The memo should include a brief description of how the item was lost or damaged, thus requiring a replacement. The memo shall be forwarded to the CISU OIC Property Control Division. Upon receiving the approved memo. PDC will issue the member's replacement eyewear equipment. PCD will keep issued eyewear replacement logs, and copies of this log will be scanned and emailed to HSU ([email protected]) for compliance.
