SFPD Continues Search for Missing and Recovery Effort of Sunken Vessel in SF Bay #26-086

The San Francisco Police Department is continuing its efforts Thursday to locate the three missing individuals and recover the wreckage of the 49-foot cabin cruiser Volare in San Francisco Bay.

The department’s Marine Unit is coordinating closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and other partners to locate the vessel, which is at an estimated depth of 120 feet on a rocky seabed.

SFPD Marine Unit divers, with assistance from the Alameda County Volunteer Dive Team, are currently using multiple boat-mounted sonar platforms and other tools to conduct a grid search for the vessel.

The SFPD’s Marine Unit has been operating in an area with strong tidal currents along with wind and weather challenges.

Once the vessel has been located and positively identified, SFPD will coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard and other partner agencies to evaluate recovery options and determine whether a safe and feasible recovery operation can be conducted.

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., SFPD responded to a call of a vessel in distress with multiple individuals aboard about 600 feet west of Alcatraz.

The SFPD’s Marine Unit, along with the SF Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard and local mariners, assisted in rescuing 16 individuals from the water. Unfortunately, one victim was pronounced deceased. A deceased dog was also recovered.

At this time, three individuals remain missing. On Wednesday, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Coast Guard suspended its search for the missing individuals.

The SFPD will continue its investigation into the cause of the sinking while continuing the recovery effort.

Our hearts go out to all the individuals involved in this tragic incident. The SFPD would like to thank all our partner agencies and members of the public for their quick actions during the rescue and for their tireless work on the response and search for the missing individuals.
