The Major Incident Response Team (MIRT) is designed to respond to major incidents, and when necessary, lead the investigative aspects of a major incident. Major incidents include, but are not limited to: mass casualties, active shooter/attackers, terrorist attacks, workplace violence, life threatening injuries to a member, and any incident at the direction of the Commander or Deputy Chief of the Investigations Bureau.

When these incidents are the investigative responsibility of the San Francisco Police Department and MIRT is deployed, the determination of the lead investigator(s) rests with the Commander or Deputy Chief of the Investigations Bureau.

Additionally, if MIRT is not the lead yet the investigation calls for a major coordinated effort, then MIRT would be available to assist and support the lead unit.

MIRT, in collaboration with the Real Time Investigations Center (RTIC), amends the Department's past I-Cell concept. In major incidents, the unit ultimately responsible for the investigation shall deploy investigators to RTIC. RTIC's role is to support by gathering information such as background on the suspect and the incident until the situation is resolved.

MIRT is comprised of members in the Investigations Bureau. The Officer in Charge of RTIC serves as the current Officer in Charge of the team.

Further details of MIRT are outlined in Investigations Bureau Order 26-04, which can be accessed in PowerDMS.
