CARE Link: Connecting Communities & First Responders
In moments of crisis, clear communication and understanding can make all the difference. For individuals experiencing mental health challenges, living with intellectual/developmental disabilities, or age-related cognitive disorders, interactions with emergency services can be daunting and, at times, overwhelming. Without critical context, first responders may not have the necessary information to provide the most effective and compassionate care.
That’s where CARE Link comes in.
What is CARE Link?
CARE Link—which stands for Community, Awareness, Response, and Engagement—is a vital initiative designed to strengthen the connection between communities and emergency responders. By encouraging individuals and families to share key health and behavioral information ahead of time, CARE Link empowers first responders with the knowledge they need to approach each situation with awareness, sensitivity, and the right resources.
Why It Matters
Emergencies are stressful for everyone involved, but for those with mental health challenges, living with intellectual/developmental disabilities, or age-related cognitive disorders, a crisis situation can escalate quickly if responders are unaware of unique needs, communication barriers, or de-escalation strategies. CARE Link ensures that first responders arrive informed, prepared, and ready to provide the best possible assistance.
With this proactive approach, we can:
- Reduce misunderstandings and unnecessary stress for individuals in crisis.
- Improve safety for both community members and emergency personnel.
- Enhance trust and collaboration between first responders and the people they serve.
- Ensure individuals receive appropriate care and support rather than unnecessary legal or medical interventions.
How CARE Link Works
Community members can voluntarily provide information about mental health conditions, intellectual/developmental disabilities, age-related cognitive disorders, medical concerns, communication preferences, or specific de-escalation techniques. This information is then made accessible to police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel, allowing them to tailor their response based on an individual’s unique needs.
Working Together for a Safer, More Supportive Community
