23-195 Department General Order 5.01 "Use of Force and Proper Control of a Person" Update Packet #101
Department Notice
The purpose of this directive is to announce the revision of Department General Order 5.01 Use of Force and Proper Control of a Person, adopted by the Police Commission on November 1, 2023. The Police Commission agreed to a 30-business day implementation period and therefore, members will be held accountable for this policy starting December 18, 2023.
DN 23-156 Preemptive Deployment of Tire Deflation Devices remains in effect until the revision to DGO 5.01 becomes effective on December 18, 2023. Members who have been trained or designated proficient per DN 23-156 remain authorized to deploy tire deflation devices according to the guidance in DN 23-156 and will be deemed trained for DGO 5.01.
The updates to this policy are listed in 5.01.08 F. Vehicle Interventions which sets forth policy and procedures for the preemptive deployment of tire deflation devices.
Members are expected to have a working knowledge of all directives applicable to their respective assignment and comply with their provisions, per DGO 3.01, Department Written Directives. Members shall obey all written orders, policies, and procedures of the Department, per DGO 2.01, General Rules of Conduct.
