SFPD Books Suspect in Fatal Hit and Run Collision for Second Degree Murder #26-134

SFPD Patrol, TCIU, RTIC, Plainclothes, and SFDA Work Together to Seek Added Charge

 Per People v. Watson (30 Cal.3d 290, 1981)

On October 1, 2026, at approximately 7:05 PM, officers responded to Moscow Street and France Avenue on the report of a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

Officers arrived on scene as SFFD Paramedics rendered aid to the victim and then transported the victim to the hospital for life-threatening injuries. SFPD Traffic Collision Investigation Unit (TCIU) responded to the scene and assumed control of the investigation.

Officers were informed that the suspect fled in a vehicle and quickly obtained a photo of the suspect vehicle’s license plate. Officers assigned to the SFPD’s Real Time Investigation Center (RTIC) used Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) to search for the suspect vehicle.

A short time later, SFPD plainclothes officers located the vehicle approximately 3 miles from the collision. Officers quickly detained the suspect driver without further incident. He was identified as 29-year-old David Maldonado Sanabria.

Officers conducted a DUI investigation, developed probable cause to arrest Maldonado Sanabria, and booked Maldonado Sanabria into San Francisco County Jail.

On October 19, 2026, while Maldonado Sanabria remained in custody, SFPD was notified that the victim succumbed to injuries caused by the hit-and-run collision and was declared deceased in the hospital.

SFPD’S TCIU investigators, along with assistance from the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, determined Maldonado Sanabria’s criminal history contained multiple prior DUI convictions.

On October 22, 2026, taking into account the DUI fatality, prior DUI convictions, and the toxicology results, SFPD booked Maldonado Sanabria for the following violations:
  • 187(a) PC, 2nd degree, per People v. Watson (30 Cal.3d 290, 1981), driving under the influence
of drugs or alcohol, causing a fatality, with conscious disregard for human life.
  • 191.5(a) PC, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, causing a fatality, with reckless
    disregard for human life.

  • 20001(b) CVC, fleeing the scene of a fatal collision.
  • 23153(g) CVC, driving a vehicle under the combined influence of drugs and alcohol, causing
