23-105 Department General Order 6.04 "Assaults on Police Officers" Update Packet #88
Department Notice
The purpose of this notice is to announce the revision of Department General Order 6.04, Assaults on Police Officers, adopted by the Police Commission on June 14, 2023. The updates in this policy include, but are not limited to the following:
- Outlines the responsibilities of officers and supervisors in relation to rendering aid, notifications, crime scene management, evidence, BWC, and use of force.
- For serious injuries or hospitalization, notify the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) for employee assistance and peer support (see DGO 11.04 Peer Support Program and DGO 11.09 Employee Assistance Program/Stress Unit). The Medical Liaison shall also be notified.
- For assaults resulting in a serious injury to an officer or transport to the hospital, General Work Detail (weekdays) or Night Investigations Unit (nights and weekends) shall be notified for a response.
- If an officer is seriously injured or hospitalized as a result of an assault and there is a serious use of force and/or in custody death ("Covered Incidents"), the incident will be investigated in accordance with the SFPD-SFDA MOU.
Members are expected to have a working knowledge of all directives applicable to their respective assignment and comply with their provisions, per DGO 3.01.13, Department Written Directives, Accountability and Acknowledgement. Members shall obey all written orders, policies, and procedures, per DGO 2.01 General Rules of Conduct, Written Orders
