The purpose of this directive is to announce the new Department General Order 11.13, Directed and Recommended Referrals to the SFPD Behavioral Science Unit, adopted by the Police Commission on July 12, 2023.

This Department General Order was created to provide supervisors with a mechanism to help employees get assistance that they may not recognize they need. Specifically, this policy provides supervisors with guidance on when and how to make a referral to the Behavioral Science Unit (BSU).

A referral to the SFPD BSU may be directed or recommended. A referral is not intended to be punitive or disciplinary in nature, nor is it a fitness for duty evaluation. However, noncompliance with this order could lead to the Department taking punitive action.

Nothing in this Order precludes an employee from reaching out to the BSU directly.

Members are expected to have a working knowledge of all directives as applicable to their respective assignment and comply with their provisions, per DGO 3.01.13 Written Communications – Accountability and Acknowledgement. Members shall obey all written orders, policies, and procedures of the Department, per DGO 2.01 General Rules of Conduct.

Department General Order update packet #90 is attached to this notice and is available to members on the PowerDMS site.
