SFPD Makes Second Arrest in Northern District Assault 22-097

On July 15, 2022, at approximately 11:03 am, San Francisco Police Officers assigned to Northern Police Station responded to the 1000 block of McAllister Street on a report of an aggravated assault.    

Upon arrival, officers located the assault victim, a 61-year-old male. Officers rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The victim told officers that he lost consciousness during the assault. He was later transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a fractured eye socket and lacerations to his face requiring stitches. Officers located a suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Nelson Martinez of San Francisco, who had been detained by the victim and witnesses prior to the officers’ arrival. Officers took custody of Martinez. During the initial investigation, the victim told officers that he was struck multiple times with a wooden object and was physically assaulted by two unknown male suspects, including the one that officers had detained. The second suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.  

Martinez was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Martinez was later transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon (245(a)(1) PC), assault by means to cause great bodily injury (245(a)(4) PC), conspiracy (182(a)(1) PC), enhancement for causing great bodily injury (12022.7(a) PC), and two out of county arrest warrants.   

On July 27, 2022, at approximately 2:09 pm, San Francisco Police Officers assigned to Northern Station responded to the 1000 block of McAllister Street after receiving a call that the second suspect had returned to the area.  With the help of bystanders and witnesses, officer located the suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Andrew Morelopena of San Francisco. Following a brief struggle, Morelopena was taken into custody. Morelopena was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  Morelopena was later transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon (245(a)(1) PC), assault by means to cause great bodily injury (245(d) PC), aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury (243(d) PC), two counts of possession of illegal drug paraphernalia (11364(a)(1) H&S), and willfully resisting arrest (148(a) PC).
