SFPD Commences Virtual Town Hall for October 9th Officer-Involved Shooting in the Northern District 23-126(a)

Virtual event provides preliminary information gathered from ongoing investigations, which will continue to develop as multiple independent investigations continue. 

The San Francisco Police Department commenced its virtual town hall on the October 9, 2023, officer-involved shooting incident that occurred between uniformed San Francisco Police officers and 31-year-old Zhanyuan Yang. On Monday, October 9, 2023, at approximately 3:09 p.m. San Francisco Police Officers responded to the area of Geary Blvd. and Laguna St. on a report of a vehicle that crashed into a building. Officers arrived on scene and found that the vehicle had come to rest in the lobby of the Chinese Consulate. An officer contacted the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers rendered aid and summoned paramedics to the scene. Paramedics with the San Francisco Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the lifesaving efforts of officers, paramedics, and hospital staff, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

The SFPD and officials from the US State Department are working with the Chinese consulate.
