When officers arrived on scene, they observed the male suspect. When the officers attempted to stop the suspect, a foot pursuit ensued and the suspect fired a gun at officers, as he fled.  No officers or bystanders were struck by gunfire. Multiple officers responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the area. The suspect was located hiding under a vehicle and appeared to be in possession of a firearm.

Officers from the SFPD Tactical Team and Hostage/Crisis Negotiations Team arrived on scene and attempted to contact the subject who refused to comply with orders to surrender.

Due to the coordinated efforts of the SFPD Specialist Team, Tactical Team, and Hostage/Crisis Negotiations Team, officers were able to successfully negotiate the suspect’s surrender and placed him into custody without further incident. Officers also located and seized a rifle and a handgun that the suspect used in the incident.

Officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect, identified as 39-year-old male, Joe Chierici. Chierici was transported to County Jail where he was booked for a litany of charges, which include two counts of assault with a firearm upon a police officer (245(d)(2) PC), two counts of resisting an officer using force (69 PC), resisting arrest (148(a)(1) PC, burglary (459 2nd degree PC), and committing a felony while out on bail (12022.1 PC, Court # 23012177).
