SFPD Airport Bureau Sergeant Injured During Incident at Airport Rental Car Center 20-026

On February 26, 2020, at approximately 7:20 AM, officers from the SFPD Airport Bureau responded to the Rental Car Center (RAC) on the 700 block of McDonnell Road regarding a trespasser who had locked herself in a rental car. Upon arrival, the officers contacted the suspect whom they recognized from prior contacts as 23-year-old Ananda Butler. Officers began a dialogue with Butler and used a marked SFPD vehicle to prevent the Butler from driving out of the parking space and endangering RAC employees and customers.

After approximately 20 minutes, Butler started the car, shifted it into reverse and struck a concrete wall. A sergeant attempted to back away from the vehicle but the left rear tire ran over his foot causing injury. The other officers on the scene were brushed by the vehicle but were not injured. Butler then turned the wheels to the left, changed direction and pushed a parked and unoccupied car out of the way. She drove forward, approximately 25 yards, before colliding with a concrete wall. Officers then took Butler into custody.

The sergeant was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Butler was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. She was then booked at the San Mateo County Jail on the charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, auto theft, trespassing and a warrant for violating her probation on prior auto theft. Butler’s booking photo may be requested from the San Mateo District Attorney’s Office.

While an arrest was made this remains an open investigation.
