San Francisco Police Arrest Wanted Hate Crime Suspect 21-155

The suspect was wanted in connection with over 30 burglaries and vandalisms citywide.

Beginning in late April of 2021 a series of burglaries and vandalisms began occurring across San Francisco. Many of the incidents occurred in the City’s Chinatown neighborhood and Ocean Avenue Corridor. Investigators from the Taraval Neighborhood Team (TNT) led the investigation and determined that the burglaries and vandalism followed a similar pattern and were connected. Investigators disseminated several crime bulletins containing photos of the possible suspect to sworn San Francisco Police officers.

On August 11, 2021, police officers from Taraval Station detained a suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Derik Barreto, in the area of Ocean Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard. Officers determined that Barreto matched the description of the suspect wanted in connection with the burglaries and vandalism. Barreto was transported back to Taraval Station. Investigators developed information that linked Barreto to the incidents. Barreto was transported to San Francisco County Jail and booked on four counts of second-degree burglary (459 2nd PC), 27 counts of vandalism (594(b)(1) PC), 31 counts of hate crime enhancement (422.75 PC), 31 counts of being armed in the commission of a felony (12022(b)(1) PC), and four counts of possession of burglary tools (466 PC).

“This arrest exemplifies the teamwork, patience, and investigative tenacity of the Taraval Neighborhood Team, foot beat, and patrol officers,” said Taraval Station Captain Nick Rainsford.

While an arrest has been made, this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.
