Retirement Ceremony for Police Horses June 3rd

The San Francisco Police Department will honor three horses of the SFPD Mounted Unit in a retirement ceremony on Monday, June 3, in front of Lefty O’Doul’s restaurant, 333 Geary St., just off Union Square, at 9 A.M. Hammer arrived for duty on April 3, 2002 and retired on January 28, 2013. Rebel began his tour of duty on January 20, 2011 and will be retiring this June. There will be a posthumous honoring of Magnum, who started his police career on March 4, 2008 and died earlier this month, on May 17.

The ceremony will also welcome two new horses to the Mounted Unit, Quin and Strider, who both began their police tours of duty in January.

Rebel, Quin and Strider will be in attendance.

Immediately following the ceremony the horses retiring from the SFPD Mounted Unit will go to a farm in Davis, where, through the generosity of a benefactor, will enjoy the rest of their lives in comfort and tranquility.
