In 2008, the Department launched its Gun Shot Location System, commonly referred to as ShotSpotter. This system has proven to be an effective public safety tool toward reducing gunfire related crime and improving officer safety. The system has since received several upgrades and advancements, including a mobile ShotSpotter application.

ShotSpotter allows officers in the field to receive critical, timely data, including:

  • Precise location of gunfire with closest street address
  • Exact time and number of shots fired
  • Speed and direction of travel (if moving)
  • Audio recording of the shots fired
  • Detailed map of ShotSpotter activation
  • Gunfire incident history

Due to the real-time information it provides, ShotSpotter data can aid officers in the field in the following:

  • Apprehension of suspects
  • Location of crime scene(s)
  • Location of victim(s)
  • Location of evidence

This application is essential in investigating gun related crime, improving officer safety, and furthering the Department's endeavor to prosecute armed suspects and comprehensively collect gun related evidence.

Officers are reminded that the ShotSpotter application is on department cell phones and should be utilized to assist in the location of ShotSpotter incidents and in the assistance with the collection of forensic evidence at shooting and shots fired incidents.
