This Department Notice formally announces the renaming of the Stunt Driving Response Unit (SDRU) to the Sideshow Response & Enforcement Unit (SREU). The updated name aligns the unit's designation with terminology commonly used in the California Vehicle Code and more accurately reflects the enforcement focus on illegal sideshow activity within San Francisco.

Background

Illegal sideshows continue to pose a significant threat to public safety, obstruct roadway operations, and negatively impact the quality of life in affected neighborhoods. The prior unit name, "Stunt Driving Response Unit," does not accurately represent the conduct typically associated with sideshow incidents.

New Unit Name
Sideshow Response & Enforcement Unit (SREU)

All Department references-including written reports, operational plans, internal communications, and public messaging-shall begin using the new unit name immediately upon the effective date of this Notice.

Mission Statement

"The Sideshow Response & Enforcement Unit (SREU) protects San Francisco's streets by rapidly disrupting illegal sideshows and high-risk vehicle activity. Through targeted enforcement, coordinated operations, and active community partnerships, the SREU works to stop dangerous behavior before it escalates. Beyond sideshow response, the unit is committed to identifying and addressing public safety
issues that impact the daily quality of life in San Francisco, ensuring every neighborhood remains safe, responsive, and resilient."

Implementation

  • The Policy Development Division will update all forms and references to SDRU.
  • Division/Unit Commanders shall ensure personnel are informed of the name change.
  • Media/Public Affairs should update public-facing materials accordingly.
