Representatives from the California Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA) may arrive at an SFPD facility with or without prior notice to investigate a workplace incident, to conduct interviews, or to investigate a reported workplace hazard. Because the information gathered during an inspection or interview may be used to evaluate compliance with regulatory standards and to assess the potential for citation issuance, it is paramount that the appropriate Department personnel are notified and/or present.

In the event of any visit (scheduled or unannounced) from Cal/OSHA, politely greet the representative and ask for identification and the reason for the visit. Cal/OSHA representatives are required to display their identification/credentials and to explain the reason for the visit.

Members should immediately notify the following Department personnel when a Cal/OSHA representative has arrived at any SFPD facility:

  • Any supervisor at the facility (if you are a supervisor, only notify the two personnel below)
  • During Business Hours: SFPD Health & Safety [Redacted]
  • After Business Hours: DOC [Redacted]

These Department notifications must be completed and the appropriate Department personnel must be present before agreeing to allow Cal/OSHA representatives access to any facility for the purpose of an inspection or before agreeing to participate in any interview.

In the event of an unannounced visit, Cal/OSHA representatives will routinely wait for up to one hour while the appropriate Department personnel are notified. Do not turn the representative away. Do not discuss any work-related matters with the representative nor should you answer any questions until the appropriate Department personnel have arrived.

Refer to ON 26-024 for guidance in reporting serious injuries or illnesses to Cal/OSHA.
