The purpose of this notice is to remind members of information related to Sabre Red OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) GEL spray use.

Sabre Red OC GEL Spray Training Reminder

  • Each cannister contains ten (10) one second bursts of Sabre Red OC GEL spray.
  • Sabre Red OC GEL spray has a maximum effective range of 15 to 20 feet.
  • To avoid back splash and eye damage to the subject, the minimum distance is 4.5 to 6 feet.
  • The cannister can be deployed at any angle and does not need to be shaken prior to deployment.
  • There are two (2) numbers on the bottom of each cannister, to the right of the expiration date. The top number is the batch number and the bottom number is the serial number.
  • The color of the Sabre Red OC GEL spray is red/orange.
  • Sabre Red OC GEL spray has 1.33% Major Capsaicinoids Content.
  • There is an ultraviolet marking dye that is detectable on skin and clothing up to 48 hours after deployment.

Decontamination 

Suspects – See DGO 5.01, Use of Force Policy and Proper Control of a Person.

Members – As a helpful tip, members may take a cold shower, wash their exposed clothes in a cold-water cycle separate from other clothing, and run one wash cycle after washing contaminated clothing to remove residuals from the machine.

Incident Report

If members are required to complete an incident report pursuant to Type III uses of force (DGO 5.01, Use of Force Policy and Proper Control of a Person), members should include both the batch and serial numbers in the incident report or Body Worn Camera when deploying Sabre Red OC GEL spray. Sabre Red is unable to defend the Department or its members during a civil suit if these numbers are not documented.

If the numbers become illegible or the cannister becomes expired or damaged, members shall complete a Uniform and Equipment Replacement form (SFPD 172) and submit the form to their commanding officer for approval. Members are to forward the approved form to Property Control Division.
