Partners In Communication LLC is the Department's contracted provider for in-person American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation.

To request an in-person ASL interpreter:

  • Call [Redacted] Monday–Friday between 0730-1830 hours.
  • For after hours, holidays, and weekends, call the above listed number and dial [Redacted] to leave a message. Members should expect a call back quickly.

Provide the customer service representative with the following information:

  • Name, star number, and contact number
  • Name and star number of the officer handling the investigation, if different from the requester
  • Date and time the ASL interpreter is needed
  • Response location, directions, and parking instructions
  • Name of the deaf or hard of hearing person
  • Summary of the situation and actions that may take place. (Victim interview, criminal interrogation. etc.)

Partners In Communication LLC interpreters often travel from outside of San Francisco. Response times will generally exceed 30 minutes.

If an in-person interpreter is unavailable, or if the wait for one would be impractical, members should consider using LanguageLine on their Department-issued cell phone, which provides live sign language interpretation.

The Department also has a limited number of sworn members who are certified sign language interpreters.
