The application filing period for the Q-60 Lieutenant examination will begin on Friday, May 8, 2026, and conclude on Friday, May 22, 2026. Please see the attached examination announcement containing pertinent information. Members can apply for the Lieutenant examination at https://careers.sf.gov/.
Minimum Qualifications for Q-60 Lieutenant
- Sworn members of the San Francisco Police Department who have completed probation as a Sergeant and two (2) years of experience with the San Francisco Police Department at the rank of Q-50 Sergeant with permanent status as of close of the application filing date. Length of service is calculated from the completion of probation. AND
- Possession of a POST Supervisory Certificate issued by the California Department of Justice, Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The requirements for a POST Supervisory Certificate (as specified in SFPD DN 26-) are:
- Possess or be eligible to possess an intermediate certificate; and
- 60 college units, plus two years in a supervisory position; and
- Completion of Supervisory Course AND
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications above by the application filing deadline to be considered a “qualified candidate”.
NOTE:
- Overtime hours will not be credited towards the experience requirement. A maximum of one year of experience is eligible for credit in any rolling calendar year.
- Experience gained in any acting assignment cannot be credited towards the experience requirement.
