Captain Joseph McFadden is a fourth-generation San Franciscan, who was born and raised in the Mission District along with nine brothers and sisters. He attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Saint Mary’s College. The death of his brother Michael, an SFPD officer, from cancer in 1987 inspired McFadden to join the department two years later. He went on to work out of Northern, Taraval, Ingleside, Mission, Tenderloin and Bayview stations, as well as serve on the Tactical SWAT team, and in the Crime Suppression Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit, Management Control Division, Film Liaison Unit, Homeland Security and Crime Scene Investigations. After being promoted to Captain in 2012, McFadden served as commanding officer of the Major Crimes Unit, Special Victims Unit and Ingleside Station. As commanding officer of the General Crimes Unit, McFadden oversees the Burglary Detail, Night Investigators Unit and Narcotics Division.
